How to identify the position of cells

GIMP procedure for images

1.Open the file in the GIMP
(If you are using a Mac, you must install X11 from the optional installs on the OS installation disk).

2.Select the rectangle select tool in the top left hand corner of the GIMP toolbar, or to do so simply, press “r”.

3.Select the “free select” option in the pane that appears.

4.Drag your cursor to select the region that you want analyzed.

5.Note the coordinates of the top left corner of the selected region. The coordinates are displayed at the bottom left of the window where the picture is open, of the top left corner. This should be directly entered into the analysis program.

6.Go to the GIMP toolbar and look underneath the “free select” drop-down box. You will see the width and height of the region you selected in the fourth step in grey. Note this down as well. This is also a parameter required by the analysis program.

7.In the “free select” drop-down box, there is an option called “fixed size”. Choose that for any remaining regions that must be analyzed. They must all be the same size due to the fact that the analysis program can only handle one region area for all of the regions that are to be analyzed.

8.Repeat step 5 as many times as necessary.

The Gimp is a free program that can substitute for Photoshop in many instances.

One can also determine the coordinates in Photoshop or by trail and error.
