Sessile vs. Petiolate: A gallery of selected leaf types for Texas Chaptalia species.

The foliage of the gallery is indexed by number only. Placing the cursor over the full-sized image (not on the white border) will show its specific name and general location. Included are specimens from Travis, N. Hays, & Real Counties as well as from the SE U.S. Leaf bases from the original holotype specimen for C. texana Greene (Nealley 297, 1890) and paratype specimen for C. nutans var. texana (Greene) Burkart (Engelmann 446, 1847) are also shown. Species represented are C. tomentosa, C. carduacea and C. texana.

Although the key in Nesom's 1995 "Revision of Chaptalia" (Phytologia 78) does not include C. tomentosa, the description notes "leaves ... epetiolate" (p. 158).

In contrast, John Sims' 1821 description of C. tomentosa (Curtis's botanical magazine, 48) indicates [p. 2257]:

Leaves ... narrowed at the base into a short petiole
Although in the most typical cases the winged petioles of C. tomentosa are much shorter than those of C. texana (but not those of C. carduacea), this feature may be difficult to apply to individual specimens (as is shown in the gallery of selected leaf types).
