E. arenarius sepals [Roosevelt Co., NM]. Only the outmost sepals (4 & 5), marked here, are relevant. Sepal 2, which is centered on the left, and is partially covered by 4 & 5, may appear ovate, but would not necessarily contrast with an E. nuttallianus sepal 2. Only sepal 5 on the right shows the full sepal width. Sepal 4 on the left, although not fully shown and would be difficult to measure accurately, is clearly ovate.

Contrast the above ovate sepals with the lanceolate sepals of E. nuttallianus shown below, both from areas where E. arenarius has been collected. In both images the diagnostic outer sepal is fully visible.
