The images below show the same leaves, upper and lower sides before clearing, and the venation revealed by clearing. Note that the distinctive basal acrodromous (‘palmate’) venation of E. discolor is much stronger in the Trans-Pecos specimen than in the more eastern E. sericeus (as in the Brazos specimen above it). The dense pubescence, which conceals the venation has sometimes led to identifying these Trans-Pecos forms as E. nuttallianus.
