Formation of 5-year S. minor ‘Saxophone’

The oblique descent of the meristem and leaf formation can be sensed in the earliest leaf scars. The first 6 scars (green lines) slant upward, but lower down are almost horizontal. An approximation of the overall meristem direction is represented by the purple arrows.

Each node seems to give rise to a major root (yellow), the roots increasing in size almost in proportion to the size of the leaf at that node.
