The red buckeye is a common large shrub or small tree of forests, thickets, and streams mostly east of the Edwards Plateau. The large red flowers are produced in the spring. Like related species of the genus Aesculus, it is called “buckeye” because of the eye-like appearance of the seeds, which are poisonous. A yellow-flowered variety of the same species occurs on the Edwards Plateau.
