Butterflyweed

Asclepias tuberosa

Asclepiadaceae Orange Yellow

The brilliant orange flowers of butterfly-weed attract many species of butterflies, including monarchs, the larvae of which also feed on the leaves. It is an erect plant to three feet tall that prefers sandy open areas, mostly in the eastern half of the state. It is poisonous to livestock.
