Plains Wild Indigo

Baptisia leucophaea

There are several species of wild indigo in Texas, and they have their flower groups arranged in differing ways on the plant. Perhaps the most unusual arrangement is found in this species, in which the cream-colored flower groups are borne laterally near the ground in the spring. It grows in open areas, roadsides, and especially overgrazed pastures in the eastern part of the state, and with a little imagination the plants almost appear to be the ones doing the grazing!
