Crossvine
Bignonia capreolata
This attractive woody vine is native to the forests of East Texas, but it is also cultivated and escapes in other parts of the state. It grows in a few canyons of the Edwards Plateau--whether native there or escaped from cultivation is not entirely clear. The flower color is variable--sometimes obviously two-toned red and yellow, sometimes all orange or red, sometimes other variations. Its common names derive from the fact that the stem, when cut perpendicularly across, shows a cross pattern in the cut that divides the stem into quarters. It blooms in the spring or early summer.
