Bull Nettle

Cnidoscolus texanus

Euphorbiaceae White

The bull nettle is well known to, and avoided by, Texans who know the outdoors. The beautiful white flowers, which can appear from spring through fall, belie the fact that the entire plant--except for those flowers--is covered by needle-like stinging hairs. This perennial is found in sandy open woodlands and open areas throughout the eastern half of Texas, and sporadically further west.
