Leavenworth’s Eryno

Eryngium leavenworthii

Apiaceae Purple Red

This colorful thistle-like plant, an erect annual to about 3 feet tall, is not a thistle at all but rather a member of the carrot family. The color ranges from lavender to purplish to reddish. It is a summer and early fall bloomer particularly characteristic of clay soils in the blackland prairies and weedy areas of the central and north-central parts of the state.
