Snow-on-the-prairie

Euphorbia bicolor

Euphorbiaceae Green White

Snow-on-the-prairie is a common plant of parts of eastern, central, and north-central Texas, westward being replaced by the similar snow-on-the-mountain. It is often over three feet tall, and large populations can turn a field white. The showy white parts are bracts (not petals), just like the showy red parts of the related potted poinsettia. It prefers open habitats and sometimes is the only plant obviously flowering in the hottest, driest part of the summer.
