Kansas Gayfeather

Liatris pycnostachya

Asteraceae Pink Purple

There are about 14 species of gayfeather in Texas, and most look rather like this one. The majority bloom in the fall and add a distinctive touch of purplish-pink to the landscape; several have become popular in gardens and in cut floral arrangements. A summer and fall bloomer, the Kansas gayfeather is more a wetland or damp sands species than many of the others, which tend to prefer more open and drier habitats.
