Coral Honeysuckle

Lonicera sempervirens

Caprifoliaceae Red

This East Texas vine is found along woodland edges, stream edges, and fencerows, providing attractive evergreen foliage and, in the spring, wonderful intensely red to orange-red flowers. Oddly, the pair of leaves just below each group of flowers fuses into a single structure that circles the stem. Coral honeysuckle is popular in cultivation and attracts hummingbirds. It is occasionally seen in the wild elsewhere in the state, apparently escaped from cultivation.
