Passiflora incarnata

Passifloraceae Pink Purple White

There are more than half a dozen native species of passionflowers in Texas, and of these the maypop has the showiest and largest flowers. It is found in the eastern half of the state, a sprawling vine of fencerows, roadsides, forest and stream edges, and other disturbed areas. The fruit---unlike the other native species--has an edible pulp. The vine is the preferred food plant of the larvae of the beautiful Gulf Coast fritillary butterfly.
