Chapman’s Orchid

Platanthera chapmanii

Orchidaceae Orange

In mid-summer this Big Thicket orchid produces an “extravagance of orange blooms”, as Joe and Ann Liggio describe it in their wonderful book, Wild Orchids of Texas (1999). A denizen of boggy areas of pine flatwoods, it is rare and becoming rarer. There are several similar species in East Texas.
