Honey Mesquite
Prosopis glandulosa
The mesquite is one of the best-known Texas plants, being an abundant small to large and gnarled tree of all parts of the state except the extreme east. It has long been used by humans in many ways, including for food from the seeds, honey from the flowers, and flooring and furniture from the extremely hard, dark wood. In some parts of the state, this is the only wood that would be considered appropriate for smoking meats in making real Texas barbecue! It generally flowers in the summer.
