Hoary Azalea

Rhododendron canescens

Ericaceae Pink White

Cultivated azaleas are favorites in East Texas gardens, but there are two native species out in the woods as well, typically growing in wet or boggy areas or in low pine flatwoods in sandy light soils. This one, the hoary azalea, has pink (rarely white) flowers that appear in the spring, before the leaves come out or as they unfold.
