Every part of Texas has at least one species of native sage (not to be confused with sagebrush!), and there are about twenty species in the state. Most Texas species are perennial or annual herbs or low shrubs of open habitats, but the mountain sage is a much-branched shrub to six feet tall of the wooded canyons of the Chisos Mountains in the Big Bend. It produces spectacular red blooms in the summer or fall, and it is without doubt one of the most beautiful plants of the Trans-Pecos.
