Western Horsenettle
Solanum dimidiatum
Solanaceae
Blue
Purple
The western horsenettle is a common and somewhat weedy species of the central and north-central parts of the state. Although a pretty flower, the plant is poisonous to livestock and causes serious neurological effects and in some cases death. The flowers, which vary from bluish to lavender-purplish to very pale, are produced in the summer or fall. They look quite like the flowers of the potato, to which it is related.
