Woolly Globe-mallow

Sphaeralcea lindheimeri

This spring-blooming wildflower forms large patches in loose sand of prairies and post-oak woodlands of southern Texas, mostly near the coast and in the inland sand plain of South Texas. It is native only to Texas; it is thus said to be “endemic” to Texas, which can be said of about 300 other Texas plant species as well, showing the unique nature of our flora. Its common and scientific names commemorate the “Father of Texas Botany”, Ferdinand Lindheimer (1801-1879), who collected this species in 1845.
