Like the true buckeyes (such as the red buckeye), to which it is not related, the Texas buckeye derives its name from the eye-like appearance of its seeds (which, also like the true buckeyes, are poisonous). This small tree is a spring bloomer, the flowers appearing before the leaves. It is especially at home in rocky limestone canyon woods of the Edwards Plateau, but it ranges into many other parts of the state and is also becoming popular in cultivation.
