Hubbs Ichthyological Society
Dr. Clark Hubbs had a long and illustrious career in Ichthyology, more than 50 years of it at the University of Texas at Austin, where he started and built the University's Fish Collection, now part of the Texas Natural History Collections of the Biodiversity Collections in the Department of Integrative Biology.
Shortly following his death in February 2008, Clark's former students and many other individuals interested in honoring him and his career began to discuss forming this society. At the time of publishing this webpage, in March 2008, the society is still young and informal, but these pages are published in an attempt to help communicate information about it to interested individuals.
The initial vision for this Society (H.I.S.), as discussed at the memorial services held to honor Clark shortly after his death, and via email among his former students, colleagues and others, is that the H.I.S. will strive to continue Clark's life-long efforts to document the Texas freshwater fish fauna, to learn more about it, and to help protect it and the habitats it occuppies. A strong fieldwork component is anticipated, with interested persons getting together at regular intervals to collect, sort, identify and deposit specimens in collections to continue the strong baseline data Clark provided via his extensive collections in the 1950's - 1980's that are now deposited in the Texas Natural History Collections.
