She also is interested in high elevation meadows and explores how vulnerable communities of plants and pollinators differ across these naturally fragmented landscapes. Her PhD work is broadly focused on how microbes mediate plant-pollinator interactions. She is currently studying how a widespread pathogen impacts bumblebee population health over time, and how medicinal floral diets might mediate these outcomes. Additionally, she is interested in broadening the lens of plant-insect interactions to the vast world of soil microbial communities belowground, so that we might elucidate their underrecognized impact on pollination function. In her projects, she tends to combine her backgrounds in field ecology and population\/community genomics to answer these questions. Beyond her current research, she is passionate about agroecology, community gardens, and outreach. She investigates how to make scientific spaces\u2014particularly fieldwork environments\u2014more accessible and inclusive for learners and researchers in ecology. She has studied this in a variety of contexts, such as the effect of agricultural intensification on pollinator growth and survival, effects of urbanisation on pollinator communities, effects of plant biodiversity loss and water availability on floral traits governing<strong> <\/strong>pollinator attraction, visitation, and their resultant effects on plant reproductive success.&nbsp; Her work has taken her from the urban community gardens in south eastern Michigan to the coffee farms in southern Mexico, and now to the sub-tropical grassland prairies of Central Texas. In her PhD work, she investigated the impacts of pathogen pressure and climate on the thermal tolerance of solitary bees across their range, and described how host and pathogen ecologies influence transmission dynamics among bee pollinators in squash agroecosystems. In her postdoctoral work, she is assessing the risk of genetic isolation and inbreeding depression for high-elevation bumble bees in the Madrean sky islands, and investigating the roles of landscape resistance or distance in explaining patterns in their genetic structure. Her overarching goal is to inform management strategies that protect native bees from the impacts of rapid global change in both agroecosystems and natural ecosystems.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:18% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"728\" src=\"https:\/\/w3.biosci.utexas.edu\/jha\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/photo_2026-02-19_16-18-27.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3502 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>Mersedeh Pejhanmehr<\/strong> is a Comptroller\u2019s postdoctoral fellow using population genetics, phylogenetics, and pollen metabarcoding to understand the ecology and conservation of plants and pollinators. In her PhD work, she examined the phylogeny and biogeography of\u00a0Sida\u00a0(Malvaceae) worldwide, as well as the phylogeny, biogeography, and population genetics of the Hawaiian plant\u00a0Sida fallax\u00a0across the Pacific, revealing how historical dispersal, island colonization, and low genetic diversity interact with striking morphological variation. During her first postdoctoral position at the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford, she investigated reproductive isolation and post-pollination<br>gene expression in maize and teosinte, integrating molecular, genomic, and greenhouse approaches. In her current postdoctoral work at UT Austin, she is quantifying bumble bee diet breadth through pollen metabarcoding, integrating museum collections, field surveys, and population genomic data to link foraging patterns with genetic structure in declining bumble bee species of the southern United States. He&#8217;s an entomologist focused on insect and restoration ecology, insect-plant interactions, insect taxonomy, and systematics. She uses plan evaluation, spatial statistics, surveys, and case studies to identify how structural racism influences the exposure to climate risks and the proximity to adaptation interventions, and how planners and community activists navigate these dynamics.
