FAQs

Please find the answers to some frequently asked questions below. If you have a question that is not addressed here, please contact us.

Q.    Will I receive any kind of course credit for participating in UT BIOS?

No. This is an optional orientation program that does not award any academic credit or certification.

Q.    Can I participate in UT BIOS even if I am not taking BIO 311C in fall 2012?

No. You must be enrolled in BIO 311C for fall 2012 as a prerequisite for participation in UT BIOS.

Q.    I have claimed credit for Bio 311C and 311D and want a review before I go to Genetics (BIO 315H or BIO 325). Can I enroll in UT BIOS?

No. UT BIOS is not a refresher course. It is intended to prepare students specifically for the challenges of Bio 311C and 311D.

Q.    What is the “iClicker” that will be provided to all UT BIOS participants?

The iClicker is a personal response system remote that students will use for answering questions during lectures. Many introductory biology and chemistry courses at UT Austin use iClickers, and you may use the same remote for all your classes.

Q.    I want to attend UT BIOS, but I cannot afford the fee. Is there any way to get a fee waiver?

We have a limited number of need-based fee waivers available to students. All fee waivers have been issued. (Note that students with fee waivers must still pay a materials fee of $50, and the fee waiver does not include housing.) If you can document financial need (for example, if you are Pell Grant eligible), then please email us with your information to be placed on a waiting list in case a student receiving a fee waiver cancels.

Q:    Can the grade obtained on exams in UT BIOS be counted toward the grade in BIO 311C?

No. UT BIOS is an orientation program designed to give insight into BIO 311C.

Q.    Will I get help to understand what is expected on BIO 311C exams?

Yes. UT BIOS staff will help explain faculty expectations and provide assistance in understanding how to answer exam questions.

Q.    Do I need to buy a textbook for UT BIOS?

No. Handouts required for the workshop will be provided to students, and every student will receive a free course packet which can be used to study for BIO 311C regardless of the instructor teaching the course.

Q.    Will the content covered in UT BIOS also be covered during the semester?

Yes. The goal of UT BIOS is for students to get a head start on course content so they don’t feel overwhelmed during the semester. The lectures in UT BIOS will cover selected major concepts from BIO 311C material.
